2024.06.04. The Fair Economy — The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 4th that it will expand the operation of the "Security-Gym" hands-on cyber training center, in collaboration with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), to strengthen on-site practical cybersecurity capabilities.

The hands-on cyber training center targets working professionals and job seekers by analyzing actual hacking incidents to build virtual breach environments. It offers tiered courses covering breach investigation, attack and defense drills, and practice with commercial information protection products. The center operates on-site facilities in the metropolitan area (Pangyo) and the southeastern region (Busan), while also providing online courses.

Since the establishment of the training center in 2016, it has produced 8,091 trainees through last year, exceeding annual trainee targets every year.

Moreover, there have been continuous requests from incumbent workers and job seekers to expand the number of training sessions and course offerings.

To meet this demand, the ministry will expand the number of course sessions this year and introduce new programs, including a software (SW) bug hunting practice training. In the second half of the year, it plans to open region-specific courses, such as smart vessel and port security, at the southeastern training center to diversify its offerings.

First, the number of training sessions will be expanded.

Reflecting trainees' diverse opinions and operational experience from existing courses on incident response training and information security product training, the existing courses will be subdivided, and the number of sessions for high-demand courses will be increased to provide more incumbent workers and job seekers with opportunities to enroll.

A new bug-hunting practice course will be launched.

The bug hunting practice course aims to cultivate the ability to identify and report security vulnerabilities in SW. Through theoretical instruction, trainees will acquire vulnerability analysis techniques, and through hands-on training with partner companies, they will experience the entire process of finding and reporting vulnerabilities in products scheduled for release. The course will be offered in both short-term and long-term formats.

Bug hunting refers to finding unintended security vulnerabilities in digital services and the like. Because it helps improve security and safety, many leading domestic companies run their own bug bounty programs to reward vulnerability reports.

A specialized course on smart vessel and port security is also being launched.

In the second half of the year, the ministry will open a new specialized course in smart ship and port security, offering training on information security product groups tailored to smart ships and ports as well as cyber-resilience-focused response drills, with the aim of cultivating information security professionals who can support the growth of local industry.

The smart vessel and port security course will be delivered through the southeastern (Busan) hands-on cyber training center. It will provide theoretical and practical training on system upgrades, backups, and recovery tailored to vessels for working professionals at nearby shipyards, vessel parts manufacturers, the Korea Marine Engineers Association, and port control centers, as well as regional university students and job seekers.

Applications for the training courses can be submitted through the KISA Cybersecurity Talent Center website (academy.kisa.or.kr).

Jung Chang-rim, director general for information security and network policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "As digital innovation accelerates, demand is rising sharply across industries for cybersecurity professionals equipped with practical, field-ready skills. The government will focus on strengthening the job competencies of information security workers while intensively cultivating cybersecurity professionals with hands-on field expertise."
