2026.10.22. The Fair Economy — HDFC Bank, India's largest private bank by market capitalization, has launched an internal investigation after finding evidence that two senior executives leaked confidential business strategies and sensitive information with market impact.

HDFC Bank recently said it is conducting an internal investigation into two senior executives over allegations of leaking confidential information.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the internal investigation found evidence that the executives provided external parties with confidential trading strategies and sensitive information that could affect the market. They are known to be in charge of key business divisions of the bank.

The bank began the investigation after some senior executives reported suspected leaks, and during the probe, the identities of the executives were confirmed. It is now further investigating whether the leaked information was misused. The findings were reported to senior management and some board members earlier this year, and the two executives were also formally notified.

However, the identities of the two executives and whether disciplinary action will be taken have not yet been decided. A HDFC Bank spokesperson said, "In line with our policies, an internal review is underway to gather and evaluate all relevant facts of this matter, and upon completion, we will take appropriate action based on the findings."

The spokesperson added, "We are committed to maintaining high standards of ethics and governance, and we take reports of potential violations very seriously." The bank declined to comment specifically on the investigation results or the executives involved.

The incident comes as Anup Bagchi is set to take over as CEO.

HDFC Bank has seen internal conflicts surface in recent months. In March, Chairman Atanu Chakraborty abruptly resigned, citing differences between his personal values and some of the bank's operational practices. Current CEO Shashidhar Jagdishan has decided to step down after completing his six-year term.

Kaizad Bharucha, deputy managing director, also announced his intention to resign at the end of the year. He is considered a key figure who designed the bank's robust credit framework over more than 30 years of service. His departure could fuel a chain of resignations among senior management during the leadership succession, observers say.

HDFC Bank's share price has fallen about 26-29% this year. The latest leak allegations come amid growing questions about internal controls following a series of executive resignations and governance controversies.

In its second-quarter (July-September) results released on the 19th, net profit rose 5.6% year-on-year to 207 billion rupees ($2.43 billion), slightly missing market expectations. The net interest margin (NIM) narrowed to 3.16% from 3.3% a year earlier. Operating costs increased by 12.1%, while pre-tax profit in the treasury division plunged 50.2%, raising concerns about deteriorating profitability.
