2024.06.05. The Fair Economy — KEPCO KDN said on the 5th that it held a briefing on its self-testing site for security meter interoperability on the 4th at the Vision Room of the training center at its headquarters in Naju, South Jeolla Province.

According to KEPCO KDN, 35 people, including employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) related to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) security meters, attended the briefing.

The event consisted of an introduction to the AMI Quality Testing Center and the security meter interoperability testing site (the self-testing site), an explanation of the procedures and methods for using the self-testing site, an introduction to the shared growth program, a discussion session, and a tour of the AMI Quality Testing Center.

KEPCO KDN built the AMI Quality Testing Center in 2020 to support SMEs and strengthen the industrial ecosystem in the remote metering sector. The center is configured with a test environment identical to actual field conditions, covering the entire system required for AMI deployment, including servers, data concentrator units (DCUs), and modems.

Based on its experience operating the quality testing center, KEPCO KDN recognized the difficulties SMEs face in needing integration tests between their developed security meters and KEPCO's operating AMI system. The company has therefore added a self-testing facility within the AMI Quality Testing Center.

Through the operation of the self-testing facility, KEPCO KDN plans to support SMEs in improving the technical completeness of their AMI-related products. It aims to contribute to building a secure power grid based on this progress, while also promoting technology transfer and supporting the development of new technologies in the AMI field.

A KEPCO KDN official said, "As AMI deployment nears completion in 2024, it is essential to secure a safe power grid and for SMEs to develop equipment and uncover new service models using AMI data," adding, "We will become a leading energy ICT platform company that drives the building of a stable AMI industry through shared growth and cooperation with SMEs."

Meanwhile, the self-testing site is set to begin full-fledged service on the 17th, and SMEs wishing to use it can conduct their own tests at the site free of charge.

According to the "Guidelines on Protective Measures for Smart Grid Information," a notice issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, smart grid operators must use cryptographic modules verified by the IT Security Certification Center as the cryptographic modules for their smart grid systems. In addition, the cryptographic algorithms used in smart grid systems must meet a security strength of at least 128 bits.

The Korea Cryptographic Module Validation Program (KCMVP) is a certification system that verifies the safety and implementation suitability of cryptographic modules used to protect important information communicated over government and public institution information and communication networks.

Therefore, security meters must be equipped with cryptographic modules certified by KCMVP.
