2024.06.10. The Fair Economy — The Ministry of National Defense said it will accept applications for the 3rd Minister of National Defense Drone-Bot Challenge from the 10th to the 30th.
The Minister of National Defense Drone-Bot Challenge has been held annually since 2022, making this year's edition the third. The contest evaluates the private sector's technological capability and military applicability in the fields of drones and robots, linking them to military requirements.
This year's competition is divided into three fields — Attack, Maritime & Aviation, and Surveillance & Reconnaissance — comprising six categories in total.
The Maritime & Aviation field competition will be held at the Goheung Drone & Aviation Center, with preliminary rounds on July 20-21 and the final round from August 31 to September 1. It will feature the 'Multi-Purpose Shipborne Drone' category, overseen by the Navy, and the 'Runway Detection Drone' category, overseen by the Republic Of Korea Air Force.
The Attack field competition will take place at the ROK Army's Seungjin Scientific Training Field in Pocheon, with preliminary rounds from July 30 to August 1 and the final round on September 6-7. The 'Drone Killer Drone' and 'Swarm Drone' categories will be held under the supervision of the ROK Drone Operations Command.
The Surveillance & Reconnaissance field competition will be held at the Robot & Drone Support Center and Hanbat Arboretum in Daejeon, with preliminary rounds from July 23-25 and the final round on September 10-11. The 'Forest-Penetrating Reconnaissance Drone' and 'Underground Reconnaissance Robot' categories will be conducted under the supervision of the ROK Army Training & Doctrine Command.
A total of nine teams — one top team from each of the six categories and one best team from each of the three fields — will receive prize money and plaques. The winning team in the Attack field will receive 40 million won (about $29,000), and the total prize pool amounts to 200 million won (about $140,000).
In particular, for the three categories selected as best in their field, the military plans to verify the excellence of the technology demonstrated and grant them an opportunity for a trial military operation.
Meanwhile, as the Attack field competition is being held in conjunction with a local festival in Pocheon, it will also offer entertainment such as military band and honor guard performances and a military taekwondo demonstration.
The Minister of National Defense Drone-Bot Challenge is open to anyone in Korea, including companies, universities, research institutes and individuals, and teams may also take part in consortium form by forming collaborative groups. Ryu Hyo-sang, director of the Advanced Capabilities Planning Bureau at the Ministry of National Defense (Navy Rear Admiral), who heads the organizing department, said, "This competition consists of practical technology events for achieving our military's tactical missions and is designed to enhance connectivity with military requirements. We ask drone and robot companies and experts to actively take on the challenge."
