2024.06.22. The Fair Economy — LGU+ (CEO Hwang Hyeon-sik) announced on the 23rd that it has unveiled "U+ PQC-VPN," a virtual private network solution incorporating Post Quantum Cryptography technology, for corporate customers.
According to LGU+, the newly unveiled U+ PQC-VPN is the first product of its kind in Korea to receive a "Security Function Confirmation" from the National Intelligence Service, a testament to its excellence.
Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) is an encryption algorithm that is difficult to crack even with quantum computers, which operate far faster than supercomputers. As advances in IT bring quantum computers that vastly outpace supercomputers, security threats are rising, and PQC is drawing attention as a next-generation information security technology.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a virtual communication network created to prevent external intrusion when two objects communicate with each other. Security algorithms are applied to such virtual networks, and U+ PQC-VPN introduces PQC in addition to these existing algorithms.
U+ PQC-VPN consists of eight types of solutions that can be applied from 500Mbps to 36Gbps depending on internet line bandwidth, allowing for customized adoption according to a company's situation. A strength of the solution is also that LGU+'s security operations monitoring center provides 24-hour monitoring services, enabling rapid response to any issues.
With the launch of this solution, companies can now use PQC-encrypted communication by simply adding a single piece of equipment to their existing internet setup, without major construction work. This gives companies an additional option beyond separately subscribing to existing dedicated-line services.
U+ PQC-VPN is expected to be useful for companies that need to exchange encrypted data between headquarters and branches nationwide. It is expected to prove especially valuable for organizations handling sensitive customer information, such as public institutions, financial institutions and hospitals.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Intelligence Service have drawn up a "Post Quantum Cryptography Master Plan" to convert the nation's entire cryptographic system to Post Quantum Cryptography. They have set up a "Pan-National Cryptographic System Conversion Task Force" to build the institutional groundwork for the shift to a Post Quantum Cryptography system, and plan to continue providing related technical and policy support going forward.
"As the use of quantum cryptography systems is expected to accelerate in line with government policy, U+ PQC-VPN is expected to provide powerful security services to a wide range of operators across the public, financial and private sectors," said Koo Seong-cheol, head of LGU+'s Wireline Business Division. "We will continue to strengthen our quantum security business and lead the field of quantum cryptographic communication going forward."
LGU+ made an equity investment in Crypto Lab in 2021 and has since been developing solutions incorporating the PQC algorithm. In 2022, it became the first domestic telecom carrier to launch a dedicated-line service incorporating PQC.
