2024.07.07. The Fair Economy — The Korea Radio Promotion Association (RAPA) announced on the 7th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the three mobile carriers — SK Telecom (SKT), KT, and LGU+ — to foster the technological development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that develop information and communication technology (ICT) products.

As intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) services that connect to mobile networks — such as remote monitoring, safety management and environmental surveillance — have grown in number, SMEs producing related products or components face mounting difficulties. Many lack the pre-test infrastructure needed for product development, and the process of passing quality verification can take up to two to three months.

To address these difficulties, RAPA and the three carriers have expanded the environment for coexistence with SMEs through annual agreements.

Through this MOU, RAPA and the three carriers will enable SMEs to undergo pre-testing at the "IoT Technology Support Center" when developing new products. They will also strengthen technical mentoring to help with the commercialization inspection of IoT devices.

The three carriers will share 5G network interoperability technical specifications and regularly provide information on each carrier's product inspection environment so that SMEs can manufacture products accordingly. In addition, RAPA's test results will be utilized during product inspection, and technical advice and consulting will also be provided to SMEs.

Under this MOU, SMEs are expected to be able to shorten development periods by receiving technical support during the new product launch process. Additionally, using the IoT Technology Support Center is expected to reduce development costs.

Before launching full-scale activities, RAPA and the three carriers held an MOU signing ceremony at RAPA's Mokdong headquarters in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, reaffirming their commitment to nurturing SME technology.

Attendees included Yang Yong-yeol, Secretary General of RAPA; Ryu Tak-gi, Head of Infrastructure Technology at SKT; Lee Jun-ho, Head of Device Marketing at KT; and Kang Bong-su, Head of the Quality Innovation Center at LGU+, along with other key executives.

Song Jeong-su, Executive Vice President of RAPA, stated, "In the AI era, it is urgent to revitalize win-win cooperation to support domestic SMEs in the hyper-connected 5G-6G IoT field. Through this MOU, we will spare no support to ensure that RAPA can serve as a bridge for win-win cooperation between large and small enterprises in the 5G IoT field."
