2024.07.09. The Fair Economy — The Digital Platform Government Committee said it held an "Expert Seminar for Realizing Digital Twin Korea" on the 9th at The-K Hotel Seoul in Seocho-gu, Seoul, with about 70 digital twin experts from industry, academia and research institutes attending to help establish the "Digital Twin Korea Strategy."
A digital twin refers to a digital replica that identically reproduces the structure, characteristics, and behavior of real objects or systems in a virtual world. Synchronized information between physical objects and the virtual world can contribute to decision-making that realizes value by providing predictive functions such as monitoring, analysis, and experimentation.
The Committee had previously announced, through its "Plan for Realizing a Digital Platform Government," that it would promote Digital Twin Korea and build a hyper-connected digital twin to secure high-quality data, implement scientific decision-making using artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies, and invigorate related industries.
Building on that implementation plan, the Digital Twin Korea strategy now being prepared will use quality data, cloud computing and AI to support problem-solving across all fields, including the economy and administration. Through data linkage between government ministries, it aims to set the direction for digital twin projects and generate results.
At the seminar, the Digital Platform Government Committee's Digital Twin Task Force led the presentation of the Digital Twin Korea Strategy (Draft), which involved participation from various ministries including the Ministry of Science and ICT, and also announced the progress of the selected municipalities (Busan Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangbuk-do) for the core project, the Digital Twin Pilot Zone Project.
The Busan Metropolitan City consortium (urban type) and Gyeongsangbuk-do consortium (rural type), selected for the digital twin pilot zone project, presented their plans to develop digital twin-based services that reflect regional characteristics and needs to enhance citizen satisfaction. Reflecting the opinions of digital twin experts that new innovative services need to be derived through linkage between regional services, they plan to consider linkage among future developed services.
The draft Digital Twin Korea strategy centers on "data," the core element of the deepening digital era, and includes key tasks from the perspectives of government, industry, the public and technology. It lays out a vision for realizing Digital Twin Korea by building a digital twin-based data circulation ecosystem and invigorating the digital twin industry to boost public benefit and global leadership.
Cha In-hyeok, a private-sector member of the Committee and head of the Digital Twin Task Force, said, "The draft Digital Twin Korea strategy was drawn up through about 20 meetings with government ministries and expert groups led by the Digital Twin Task Force since June of last year. It is meaningful in that, through selection and concentration, it includes projects whose benefits the public can quickly feel."
Seo Bo-ram, head of the Committee's Promotion Office, said, "The digital platform government is a platform that provides convenience to the public. Digital twins can be used to address disasters and social problems, supporting scientific decision-making, and we will keep working to ensure that administrative innovation ultimately raises public satisfaction."
