2024.07.13. The Fair Economy — The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced that, together with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN, it held the "2024 Asia-Pacific Internet Governance Academy (APIGA)" in Busan from August 8 to 12.

ICANN is a non-profit organization established in 1998 that oversees the global internet address resource management, including the management of internet domain names such as .com and .net, IP address allocation, and root server system management.

APIGA is an educational program designed to establish foundational concepts of internet governance and facilitate sharing and discussion on international policy-making processes related to internet issues. It has been held annually in Korea since 2016 for young people in the Asia-Pacific region.

This year, 39 young people from 23 Asia-Pacific countries completed the training. More than 30 domestic and international experts participated as instructors, including executives from internet address-related international organizations such as ICANN and the Asia-Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC), as well as field specialists and mentors.

In June, participants in the 2024 APIGA completed a four-week online pre-training covering the operation of the internet addressing system and policy development procedures at various international organizations. They then joined the main training in Busan from Aug. 8, which consisted of a four-night, five-day program focused on practical exercises and discussions.

The training consisted of lectures by international organization executives on the concepts and latest issues of internet address resources and governance, special lectures by domestic experts on generative AI and the latest trends at the UN, and participatory and activity-oriented sessions such as cybersecurity incident role-plays and mock international conferences. In particular, participants gained experience in voicing opinions in international organizations by drafting proposals for the Internet Governance Forum and participating in mock ICANN meetings, thereby building a solid foundation.

Lee Sang-jung, the KISA president, said, "I hope that APIGA provided an opportunity to learn that policies acceptable to many people can be shaped through the participation of diverse stakeholders. Since many APIGA graduates are active in the field of internet governance, KISA will continue to support young people so that they can actively participate in global internet policy decision-making processes and grow into talent that leads the international community."
