2024.07.15. The Fair Economy — LG Uplus (LGU+, CEO Hwang Hyeon-sik) said on the 15th that it has won the contract for the railway integrated wireless network (LTE-R) construction project for Seoul Metro Line9 and will begin full-scale work this month.

LTE-R is a railway integrated wireless communication system optimized for rail environments using LTE, a fourth-generation wireless technology. It enables personnel involved in train operations, such as drivers and control room staff, to communicate with one another. Unlike conventional wireless communication technologies that were primarily used for voice calls, LTE-R supports voice, video, and data services based on high speed. It is regarded as key infrastructure for safe train operation because it allows for rapid response in the event of an accident.

According to LGU+, the LTE-R construction project for Seoul Metro Line9 has so far been divided into three phases by section. LGU+ is currently building LTE-R on the section from Gaehwa Station to Sinnonhyeon Station, which corresponds to phase 1. It also plans to complete installation by November next year on the section from Eonju Station to Jungangbohun Hospital Station, a total of 13 stations (approximately 14km), which is the phase 2 and 3 project section.

Once LTE-R construction is completed in the phase 2 and 3 sections, safety for Line9 passengers is expected to be significantly enhanced. Drivers will be able to prevent safety accidents by viewing CCTV footage from platforms and inside train cars, and they can share video with the control center and safety management office to enable rapid initial response in emergencies. The inconvenience of having to use multiple pieces of equipment due to differences in communication methods between the existing phase 1 section and the new sections will also be resolved.

LG U+ mitigates radio interference by duplicating equipment used to build a seamless LTE-R and installing optimized antennas. Additionally, the company deploys safety officers throughout the construction process to monitor and improve risk factors in real time, and after completion, operates a dedicated technical team to establish a rapid response system.

Based on the experience and capabilities accumulated from building LTE-R across all sections except Line 6 and 13 subway stations where the project was not previously undertaken, LG U+ was ultimately selected as the contractor for all stages of Line 9.

Choi Jeong-hyeon, LG U+ public sales manager, said, "Having been recognized for the experience and expertise gained from carrying out LTE-R construction projects, we were able to be selected as the final contractor for the Stage 2 and 3 LTE-R construction on Line 9. We will actively participate in future extension projects and contribute to Seoul Metro providing the safest and most convenient urban rail service."
