2024.07.17. The Fair Economy — Incheon announced on the 17th that it held a meeting at the city's disaster safety situation room to discuss measures to prevent battery fires in the city and prepare countermeasures.
The city discussed sector-specific safety management plans to prevent battery fires with related agencies, including the Citizens' Safety Headquarters, the Fire Department, the Korea Industrial Complex Corp, and the Siheung Joint Disaster Prevention Center.
In particular, opinions were exchanged on various measures to strengthen safety management, including ▲ response plans and thorough safety inspections in the event of a battery fire in the firefighting sector ▲ strengthening safety management against serious accidents at battery factories and industrial complexes ▲ strengthening safety training and emergency evacuation drills for all workers, including foreign workers ▲ safety measures for similar hazardous factories and facilities handling harmful chemicals ▲ and traffic-related safety management and accident prevention measures related to lithium battery fires.
The city said it will analyze shortcomings among relevant agencies from multiple angles to derive improvement plans and establish sector-specific preventive measures, considering that the characteristics of lithium batteries make it difficult to respond effectively using existing safety management systems and response methods when accidents occur.
Ha Byeong-pil, the city's administrative vice mayor, said, "We will thoroughly conduct sector-specific safety inspections in advance and carefully review emergency management plans. We will closely cooperate with related agencies to ensure that similar large-scale disasters, such as battery fires in the city, do not recur, and thoroughly prepare to minimize casualties from large fires."
