2024.07.23. The Fair Economy — The Digital Platform Government Committee, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment recently announced that as of the 22nd, all six participating companies had completed updates enabling real-time flood-risk alerts, as part of the "Advancement of Vehicle Navigation Systems to Prevent Flooding Accidents on Roads and in Underground Roadways" project pursued to prevent loss of life and property caused by summer downpours.

With this feature update, drivers can now receive real-time flood risk information, such as flood warnings and dam releases, through their navigation screens or voice guidance, allowing them to leave risky areas or drive with extra caution.

However, the feature only alerts drivers to nearby dangers via screen and voice, advising them to drive carefully; it does not provide alternative routes.

Some navigation systems require users to update their app to the latest version to receive flood risk alerts, so drivers should check the version of their navigation system.

Earlier, at a business agreement ceremony for navigation advancement held on the 10th at the Han River Flood Control Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, the ministers of the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, along with representatives of related companies and institutions, signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen public-private cooperation to respond not only to flooding accidents but also to various disaster situations through continued navigation advancement.

Building on the achievements of the navigation advancement to prevent road and underpass flooding, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to further link various disaster and calamity information, including detours around some road sections controlled during public participation civil defense drills (scheduled for the Ulchi exercise week in August), large fires, and landslides, through cooperation with related ministries and agencies.
