2024.07.31. The Fair Economy — An event will be held to examine the current state of Korea's financial security and explore future response measures, in connection with the 'global cyber blackout' incident on July 19, in which a software update to CrowdStrike's security product caused faults in systems based on the Microsoft Windows operating system (MS Windows OS), halting the operation of major IT systems worldwide in sectors such as aviation, logistics, and finance.

The Financial Security Institute announced that it will hold a seminar titled 'Current State and Future Direction of Korea's Financial Security' on August 5 at the Korea Financial Investment Association in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul.

According to the Financial Security Institute, the seminar will analyze the progress of the incident and its impact on the financial sector, listen to expert opinions from various fields to prevent similar incidents in the future, and explore the direction of financial security.

The seminar will proceed in a panel discussion format with a keynote presentation by the Financial Security Institute and participation of experts from various fields, including Yoon Myeong-geun, professor at Kookmin University; Lee Jae-yong, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at KB Kookmin Bank; Ji Jeong-ho, CISO at Toss Securities; and Lee Seong-gwon, CEO of ENKI WhiteHat.

Through this, participants plan to review the causes and effects of the IT outage and vulnerabilities in the software (SW) supply chain security system, and share opinions on policy and technical response measures to address them.

Pre-registration for the seminar will be open from the 31st, and anyone interested can register and attend through the application link on the Financial Security Institute's website.

Kim Cheol-ung, president of the Financial Security Institute, said, "In the hyper-connected era, SW supply chain security is no longer a problem for a single company but a critical challenge affecting the entire industrial ecosystem. As it is directly linked to the safety of people's financial lives, I hope that through this seminar, the entire financial sector will recognize the importance of the SW supply chain security system and prepare more thorough countermeasures."
