2024.08.07. The Fair Economy — Gyeonggi Province announced on the 7th that it will change the official name of the "Gyeonggi International AI Media Festival," scheduled to be held in October, to "Daehanminguk AI Gukjeyeonghwaje (KOREA INTERNATIONAL AI FILM FESTIVAL)."
The province explained that the name change was made to strengthen the event's character as a global film festival and to encourage the creation of diverse content.
As the event is expanded and restructured into a film festival, judging will focus more on the originality of narrative storytelling rather than simply on videos made using generative artificial intelligence (AI).
The KOREA INTERNATIONAL AI FILM FESTIVAL will run in four categories: ▲Narrative, ▲Documentary, ▲Art & Culture, and ▲Open Format. In each category, one first-place, one second-place and four third-place works will be selected, for a total of 24 works; across all categories, a total of 26 works — including one Grand Prize and one Global South Special Award — will be chosen, with total prize money of 81 million won.
Submissions for the festival will be accepted until September 6. Those wishing to submit can find detailed information about the contest, including where to apply, submission methods, and judging criteria, on the Gyeonggi Content Agency website (www.gcon.or.kr) under business announcements.
The awards ceremony and screening will take place at the "1st KOREA INTERNATIONAL AI FILM FESTIVAL," to be held at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) on October 25.
Kim Sang-su, Director General of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, said, "Other local governments have been holding AI-related film festivals one after another, but Gyeonggi Province is the first, and the largest, to hold a film festival based solely on 'video content created using generative AI.'" He added, "Through this festival, Gyeonggi Province will have an opportunity to lead content creation using AI."
