2024.06.09. The Fair Economy — The National Intelligence Service (NIS) announced that it will conduct the "2024 Cyberattack Response Drill" from Oct. 10 to 21 in cooperation with relevant agencies, including the Office of National Security and the National Security Research Institute. The drill targets key information and communications infrastructure facilities in the public sector that are closely tied to daily life.
According to the NIS, the practical drill simulates a scenario in which core systems at key information and communications infrastructure facilities are infected with malware and shut down, causing inconvenience to the public. The exercise proceeds in the following order: detecting cyberattacks, isolating malware, treating infected systems, and restoring systems.
In particular, this year's drill will be conducted separately for control systems in energy and water resources from Oct. 10 to 14, and for information systems in public finance and healthcare from Oct. 17 to 21, taking into account the specific characteristics of each agency. The NIS aims to focus on evaluating the on-site response capabilities that security practitioners in each field must possess and strengthening their job competencies.
Yoon O-jun, the NIS's third deputy director, said, "Given North Korea's recent string of provocations against the South, including ballistic missile launches and the scattering of trash balloons, we cannot rule out the possibility of cyber provocations targeting national infrastructure such as the energy and transportation sectors. Through this drill, we will prepare in advance to secure the safety of infrastructure and swift response and recovery capabilities in the event of an emergency."
