2024.09.10. The Fair Economy — The prosecution indicted a group that operated an illegal movie-streaming site and also produced, managed, and promoted gambling sites.

The Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office's Special Investigation Division for Patent Crimes (led by Chief Prosecutor Park Dae-hwan) recently announced that it had received three programmers involved in operating the 'KBUTV' site, which illegally streamed about 40,000 movies and dramas, from the Copyright Special Judicial Police of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Through direct investigation, it additionally charged five others, including the ringleader, programmers, and account lenders, who operated the site behind the scenes and created, managed, and advertised gambling sites. In total, eight individuals were indicted without detention on charges including copyright infringement on the 3rd.

According to the prosecution's investigation, the defendants operated the KBUTV site, which illegally provided paid movies and dramas for free. They received a total of 2.7 billion won from operators of 46 gambling sites in exchange for producing the gambling websites and leasing and managing servers, and they also posted advertisements for those gambling sites on KBUTV.

The Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's special judicial police, conducted international cooperation with the United States, IP tracking, and joint seizures and searches of offices. During this process, they identified and charged five individuals, including the ringleader, who had been evading arrest using prepaid phones and bank accounts. They also uncovered total criminal proceeds of 2.7 billion won from the crimes and preserved 72 million won in assets of Defendant B, a programmer, for the recovery of those proceeds.

The prosecution stated that it will do its utmost to ensure sentences commensurate with the defendants' crimes and the recovery of criminal proceeds, and will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to strictly crack down on copyright infringement offenders.
