2024.06.04. The Fair Economy — The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 4th that it is accepting nominations for the 2024 Sports Promotion Merit Awards across four categories — the Sports Development Merit Award, the Korea Sports Award, the Sports Event Hosting Merit Award, and the Sports Industry Grand Award — aimed at boosting morale among sports professionals and promoting national sports.
The Sports Development Merit Award has been given since 1973 to honor those who have contributed to national development by raising the standing of sports through their achievements. Medals and decorations will be awarded to ▲athletes and coaches who have won medals at international competitions such as the Olympics, the Paralympics and world championships, and ▲those who have contributed to the development of national sports by discovering and nurturing professional athletes or by hosting international competitions. Central administrative agencies, local governments, public institutions, and sports organizations and academic societies may submit nominations to the Ministry's Sports Policy Division and Para-Sports Division by July 4. Member sports organizations and city/provincial sports associations affiliated with the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee should submit nominations to the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, while affiliated organizations and city/provincial chapters under the Korean Paralympic Committee should submit nominations to the Korean Paralympic Committee; submission schedules can be found on each organization's website.
The Korea Sports Award, established in 1963, marks its 62nd edition this year. Presidential citations and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister's citations are given to outstanding athletes who have contributed to the development of national sports, as well as to those who have contributed to sports research, systems and the promotion of national sports. The award is divided into nine categories: Competition Award, Research Award, Coaching Award, Merit Award, Promotion Award, Para-Athlete Competition Award, Para-Sports Award, Officiating Award, and Sports Figure's Devoted Parent Award. Nomination forms will be accepted by the Ministry's Sports Policy Division until July 4.
The Sports Event Hosting Merit Award is given each year to individuals who have contributed to hosting events such as the National Sports Festival, the National Para (Winter) Sports Games, the Jeonguk Jangae Haksaeng Cheyukdaehoe (National Youth Para Games), and the National Integrated Community Sports Festival, as well as to the promotion of community sports. Nominations for merit recipients related to the National Sports Festival and community sports are accepted by the Ministry's Sports Promotion Division, while nominations for merit recipients related to the National Para Sports Games and National Integrated Community Sports Festival are accepted by the Para-Sports Division — both until July 12.
The Sports Industry Grand Award has been given since 2005 to encourage individuals, organizations and companies that have made outstanding contributions to the development of the sports industry. It covers all areas of the sports industry — facilities, equipment and services — as well as related fields such as sports science and sports law. Nominations are accepted by the Ministry's Sports Industry Division until July 1.
Recipients will be finally determined after public verification of candidates, review by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Merit Review Committee, and qualification checks by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The award ceremonies for the Merit in Sports Development and the Korea Sports Award are scheduled for Oct. 18 at the Plaza Seoul Hotel to mark Sports Ui Nal (Sports Day), while schedules for the ceremonies for the Merit in Hosting Sports Events and the Korea Sports Industry Grand Prize will be announced separately.
