2024.06.14. The Fair Economy — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it co-hosted the "International Conference on Asia SMR Cooperation" with the U.S. Department of State in Seoul from November 11 to 13.

More than 70 SMR experts from 15 countries attended, including major nuclear power operators such as South Korea, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada, as well as Asian nations such as Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Vietnam.

In a welcoming address at the opening ceremony on November 11, Kwon Gi-hwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Coordinator for Global and Multilateral Affairs, stressed that SMRs represent a future to be shared together, saying they can help address pressing challenges such as carbon neutrality, energy security, and the surging demand for electricity linked to artificial intelligence (AI). He added that he hoped the conference would serve as a stepping stone for international cooperation toward the adoption of SMRs.

Over the three-day conference, participants shared their countries' experiences and held expert panel discussions on five topics: ▲SMR technology, ▲securing social acceptance, ▲capacity building, ▲new regulatory frameworks, and ▲nuclear security and non-proliferation.

Meanwhile, countries leading the SMR discussion, including South Korea, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada, are scheduled to discuss ways to enhance international understanding of SMRs and strengthen related capabilities on Nov. 14.
