2024.06.24. The Fair Economy — The Fair Trade Commission announced that it has newly appointed Nam Dong-il, Director of the Competition Policy Bureau (age 54), as its Secretary-General, and Yook Seong-gwon, Secretary-General (age 57), as head of the Investigation Management Office, effective as of the 24th.
According to the FTC, the newly appointed Secretary-General Nam Dong-il entered public service in 1997 after passing the second local civil service examination.
Having served as director general for competition policy and director general for consumer policy, he has outstanding expertise in the FTC's major policy areas. Recently, he has actively pursued policies that directly help small and medium-sized enterprises, small business owners, and the public, including promoting the enactment of a comprehensive dispute mediation act for swift damage relief in fair trade disputes.
The commission said Nam is well suited for the secretary-general position, which requires strong internal and external communication skills, given his experience serving as spokesperson, director of the Planning and Finance Division, and head of the Operations Support Division. It added that it looks forward to his future role in the commission's policy areas.

The newly appointed head of the Investigation Management Office, Yook Seong-gwon, entered public service in 1996 after passing the 39th civil service examination and has served as Secretary-General, Director of Market Surveillance, and Director of Corporate Group Affairs.
During his tenure as Director of Market Surveillance, he sanctioned false, exaggerated, and deceptive advertising practices concerning the 5G service speeds of the three mobile carriers. While serving as Director of Corporate Group Affairs, he successfully handled major FTC cases, including the sanction of Samsung Welstory, a Samsung-affiliated in-house catering subsidiary, for unfair support, and the sanction of Harim for unfair support by its affiliates.
The FTC expects that, based on his legal expertise and extensive experience in case handling divisions, Yook Seong-gwon will perform his role as head of the Investigation Management Office, overseeing the entire FTC case portfolio, thereby contributing to an increase in trust in the agency's case handling.
