2024.06.25. The Fair Economy — The Korea Engineering and Consulting Association said on the 25th that it held the founding general assembly of Kenci, an incorporated foundation and the country's only specialized engineering research institute dedicated to presenting a vision and road map for the engineering industry, at the Engineering Center in Dongjak-gu, Seoul.
About 50 people attended the founding general assembly, including a group of founding members from various fields as well as officials from industry, academia, research institutes and related organizations. They adopted the institute's founding purpose, approved its articles of incorporation and business plan, and named Lee Hae-gyeong, chairman of the Korea Engineering and Consulting Association, as the institute's first chairman.
The engineering industry and related organizations had long called for the establishment of a specialized research institute to present a future vision for the engineering industry and support policy development.
Taking the industry's opinions into account, the government also laid out basic directions for establishing the institute in the "Third Engineering Industry Promotion Plan," which relevant ministries jointly drew up and announced in June 2023.
In line with this, KECA formed a '(provisional) Kenci Establishment Promotion Committee' comprising experts from various fields. The committee held six meetings to complete the groundwork for the institute's launch, including its articles of incorporation, organizational structure and funding sources.
In addition, for the financial foundation, Kenca and the Engineering Mutual Aid Association, which sympathized with the purpose and necessity of establishing the institute, agreed to jointly contribute the funds needed for the operation of the institute.
Kenci plans to collect and analyze information related to the engineering industry, including institutional systems and laws, and provide it to public institutions and the engineering industry. By proposing policy alternatives, the institute aims to contribute to the development of the national economy through the growth and promotion of the engineering industry.
Lee Hae-gyeong, chairman of the Korea Engineering and Consulting Association, who was named Kenci's first chairman, said in his inaugural address, "Over the past 50 years, the engineering industry has become the foundation of Korea's development, and over the next 50 years, Korea will take a leading role in driving the global economy based on engineering." He added, "We will spare no effort in supporting the institute so that it can effectively carry out its five key policy priorities and properly serve as a creative think tank leading innovation and development in the engineering industry."
The institute, which aims to lead national development by presenting the vision and roadmap of the engineering industry, is scheduled to officially launch in January next year after consulting with related ministries and stakeholders following this inaugural general meeting.
