2024.07.01. The Fair Economy — LAVARWAVE cooperated in the arrest of the 'Kim-gun gang,' known as the largest voice phishing and webcam phishing crime organization in South Korean history.
Digital crime response company LAVARWAVE (CEO Kim Jun-yeop) announced on the 1st that it had cooperated in capturing the Kim-gun gang, the largest voice phishing and webcam phishing crime organization on record.
According to LAVARWAVE, the Kim-gun gang is the largest crime organization in South Korean history, having shaken the country with voice phishing and webcam phishing — crimes often described as "economic murder." The group is estimated to have caused combined damages of 1 trillion won (about $714 million) and five deaths. Its methods were especially vicious: in one case, the gang swindled 4.1 billion won (about $2.9 million) from a single victim, and it did not hesitate to carry out degrading sexual exploitation and character defamation.
LAVARWAVE contributed to the capture of the Kim-gun gang through three-way cooperation with the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency, which had investigated voice phishing crimes for 12 years, and JTBC.
LAVARWAVE CEO Kim Jun-yeop analyzed the structure of the malicious application the Kim-gun gang had actually used in its crimes. He then carried out forensic tracking and found a decisive clue that pinpointed the gang's base of operations: among tens of thousands of disguised IP addresses, he discovered the real IP address that a gang member had mistakenly exposed.
The location information on the Kim-gun gang's base and the related decisive evidence that CEO Kim secured were passed on to police. Using this, police cooperated with Chinese public security authorities and ultimately succeeded in arresting members of the Kim-gun gang.
"Ironically, phishing crime organizations are constantly researching new ways to create more victims," CEO Kim said. "Given this, I think we need to acknowledge that government policy alone has limits in addressing both the preventive and after-the-fact responses to crimes like webcam phishing and voice phishing. If cybersecurity response companies and the public and private sectors work together to explore a variety of approaches, we can take a step forward in preventing and eradicating these crimes."
Meanwhile, the story of how LAVARWAVE, Chungnam Provincial Police Agency Inspector Ahn Jeong-yeop, and JTBC cooperated to capture the Kim-gun gang, the largest voice phishing and webcam phishing crime organization, can be viewed on TVING's "Voice Inc."
