2024.07.17. The Fair Economy — SK Telecom said on the 17th that it will launch 'T In-Flight Wi-Fi', the first service in Korea to allow the use of Wi-Fi on board an aircraft.
'T In-Flight Wi-Fi' is a product that allows customers to sign up for the in-flight Wi-Fi service directly through SK Telecom's T Roaming website (https://troaming.tworld.co.kr) and airport roaming centers, without going through airlines.
Until now, in-flight Wi-Fi services were provided by having customers check which flights offer Wi-Fi and make payments on each airline's website. Depending on the airline, some only allowed sign-up after boarding.
SK Telecom prepared the 'T In-Flight Wi-Fi' service in collaboration with SK Telink, global airlines, and global satellite operators, enabling customers to check available flights and sign up for the service in one place.
SK Telecom launched 'T In-Flight Wi-Fi' in cooperation with six airlines: Lufthansa, Japan Airlines, China Eastern Airlines (CEA), Air Canada, qatarairways.com, and Etihad Global. The company plans to continue expanding its list of partner airlines.
The fee for SK Telecom's 'T In-Flight Wi-Fi' is divided into three tiers based on flight distance: long-haul 29,700 won (about $23), medium-haul 19,800 won (about $15), and short-haul 17,600 won (about $14) per one-time boarding.
To mark the launch of 'T In-Flight Wi-Fi', SKT has also prepared a discount promotion linked to its roaming service, the baro plan. Until December 31, customers who subscribe to the baro plan can receive discounts on 'T In-Flight Wi-Fi' fees depending on their chosen data allowance: 20% for 3/6GB, 50% for 12GB, and 100% (free) for 24GB.
The promotion discount applies for 36 days, which is the baro plan activation period of 30 days plus three days before and after. The discount can be applied twice during this period. For example, if a user of the baro 24GB plan uses 'T In-Flight Wi-Fi' three times while traveling abroad, they can use it for free for the first two times with a 100% discount (up to 59,400 won, about $43), and will be charged from the third use onward.
Yoon Jae-ung, head of SK Telecom's Subscription CO, said, "Through T In-Flight Wi-Fi, we wanted to provide our roaming customers with a differentiated service experience starting from the airplane, which is the beginning of their trip. Going forward, SK Telecom will continue to expand the list of available airlines, both domestic and international, after launch, striving to continuously offer customers more affordable and convenient services."
