2024.07.17. The Fair Economy — The Seoul Institute of Lifelong Education said on the 17th that the Seoul Citizen University Southeast Campus has been selected as a permanent digital learning center by the National Information Society Agency (NIA) for the third consecutive year in 2024.

The Seoul Lifelong Education Promotion Agency, an affiliate of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, operates three campuses of Seoul Citizens University: the Central Campus, the Southeast Campus, and the All School Campus. The Southeast Campus, located in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, is a future competency-specialized campus that offers a variety of digital-specialized curricula, including citizen university programs and collaborations with specialized institutions.

As a digital education hub for the surrounding area, the permanent digital learning center will play various roles as an educational space to strengthen the digital capabilities of the local community. It will receive support of about 130 million won (about $94,000) for construction of the learning center, procurement of the latest equipment and educational software, and the continuous placement of personnel such as digital education instructors.

At the permanent digital learning center, education and counseling to support digital capability enhancement are available. Educational programs include ▲digital use in daily life ▲finance and phishing prevention (security) ▲artificial intelligence (generative AI, ethics) ▲identity verification and public services ▲online content creation.

In addition, a dedicated information desk for the digital learning center, staffed by experts, operates to provide Q&A on smart devices and customized educational counseling for citizens. It also supports guidance on experiencing digital devices such as AR and VR available on campus. The information desk, located on the fourth floor of the Southeast Campus of Seoul Citizens University, operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

Currently, applications for the 'Smartphone Basics' and 'Computer Basics' programs are being accepted on the Digital Learning Center website, and digital programs will be offered until December, with learners recruited on an ongoing basis. For more information, visit the Digital Learning Center website (www.digitalbaeumteo.kr) or contact by phone.

In addition to operating the digital learning center, the Seoul Citizen University Southeast Campus offers various digital education courses. In particular, it is running a digital family camp for families, including elementary school students, in celebration of summer vacation. Through partnerships with specialized institutions such as Sogang University's Korean Social Sciences (SSK) Research Group, the Korea Science and Creativity Foundation's Life Science Classroom Seoul Operation Center (Ewha Womans University), and ABC LAB, it provides engaging experiential education such as hands-on coding and creativity competitions.

The 'Media Literacy Family Camp: Our Family AI Artists,' operated in cooperation with the Sogang University SSK Research Team, is a program that helps participants understand digital citizenship through attractive content such as creating a family photo book.

The 'Moon (Egg) Probe Landing Mission,' co-planned and operated with the Seoul Operation Center of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity's Living Science Classroom (Ewha Womans University), features science project activities using electric circuits and a creativity competition.

In addition, a new experiential permanent art education gallery has been established within the Southeast Campus of Seoul Citizens University, where anyone can experience digital technology and enjoy interactive exhibitions in which visitors directly participate in the artworks. The digital camp program 'Technology X Art Convergence Education: Experiencing AI with Your Body' in this space is operated by ABC LAB, an art-centered convergence education organization.

Furthermore, the Southeast Campus of Seoul Citizens University is expanding its 'digital citizenship' education this year to respond to the rapidly changing digital society beyond digital technology. It offers a variety of programs to help ordinary citizens solve digital problems they encounter in daily life, such as how to identify fake news and how to prevent and respond to digital crime.

Koo Jong-won, acting director of the Seoul Institute of Lifelong Education, said, "Strengthening citizens' digital capabilities in modern society is a crucial driving force not only for improving individual quality of life but also for the development and sustainable growth of society as a whole. We will continue to spare no effort in supporting education that builds citizens' digital capabilities."
