2024.07.22. The Fair Economy — LS Cable & System and LS Electric announced on the 22nd that they have launched the world's first superconducting solution for data centers (IDC) and will begin full-fledged entry into domestic and overseas markets, including Vietnam.

According to the two companies, the superconducting solution can transmit 154kV-class large-capacity power at a low voltage of 22.9kV, allowing power supply to be expanded without building new substations in urban areas. In addition, it does not generate electromagnetic waves, making it an effective alternative to the NIMBY phenomenon.

LS Cable & System, based on its experience of commercializing superconducting cables for the first time in the world in 2019, will be responsible for the supply and engineering of the cable system, while LS Electric will supply superconducting fault current limiters and other equipment.

The superconducting station, which replaces existing substations, consists only of a distributor without a transformer. It can be designed to be about 1/20 the size of an existing substation, enabling reduced construction costs and improved economic efficiency.

The superconducting fault current limiter responds quickly when a fault current occurs, minimizing damage from short-circuit accidents. It plays a role in preventing service interruptions at IDCs and reducing the risk of data loss, thereby enhancing stability.

The two companies expect that the superconducting system will significantly improve economic feasibility, resident acceptance, and power stability in the construction of new IDCs, presenting a new standard for power infrastructure technology in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

"Recently, through LS Eco Energy, we have been collaborating with the Vietnam Electric Power Research Institute to promote adoption within Vietnam, among other efforts to intensify overseas marketing," they said.
