2024.08.06. The Fair Economy — The Korea Internet & Security Agency (Kisa) recently announced that it is launching a campaign to inform the public of security rules for safe use of internet web browsers, in partnership with Google, Microsoft and Naver.

Web browsers are used for a variety of purposes, including information searches, online shopping and financial transactions. As a result, sensitive personal information — such as login details like IDs and passwords, as well as account numbers needed for financial transactions — is transmitted through web browsers.

In addition, most web browsers offer features such as automatic login and auto-completion of input fields for user convenience, and personal information may also be stored on a PC. Personal information stored on a PC can leak due to infections by malicious code, and when using a public PC that anyone can access, personal data may be exposed to others without the user's knowledge. Users therefore need to pay special attention to security themselves.

Kisa and the IT companies participating in the campaign have agreed to work together to protect users from these issues by informing the public of safe ways to use web browsers.

In particular, the fact that Naver has joined the campaign domestically alongside Google and Microsoft, which hold large shares of the global web browser market, underscores just how important user protection is.

Kisa and the participating companies plan to share security rules that web browser users and administrators should know and to provide simple and easy ways to apply them conveniently in practice.

The campaign will be carried out through the Kisa website and the social media accounts of each participating company. It plans to promote the security guidelines through infographics and card news, while also providing guidance on how to configure browser security settings.

Lee Sang-jung, head of Kisa, said, "Practicing a few basic security rules in everyday life is highly effective in preventing major damage such as personal data leaks, so please follow the security rules to use the internet safely." He added, "Kisa is working with various domestic and international companies to prevent harm to the public and is making every effort to achieve tangible damage prevention through diverse approaches."
