2024.09.08. The Fair Economy — Last year, cyber fraud damage reached 1.8111 trillion won, a sharp increase of 645.8 billion won compared to 2022.
According to data submitted by the National Police Agency to Rep. Han Byeong-do of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee, cyber fraud damage over the past five years grew from 222.2 billion won in 2019 to 332.6 billion won in 2020, 1.1719 trillion won in 2021, 1.1653 trillion won in 2022, and 1.8111 trillion won in 2023, an increase of more than eight times in four years, he said on the 8th.
The number of such crimes recorded 136,074 cases in 2019, 174,328 in 2020, 141,154 in 2021, 155,715 in 2022, and 167,688 in 2023, showing a consecutive increase for the past two years. As of June of this year, 112,473 cases have already occurred, and it is expected to surpass the previous year's total.
In contrast, the arrest rate has declined every year, from 77.6% in 2019 to 73.0% in 2020, 72.2% in 2021, 70.2% in 2022 and 58.0% in 2023. The arrest rate as of June this year was only 50.4%.
Rep. Han Byeong-do said, "While losses have surged, the arrest rate has fallen every year, raising doubts about whether the government is fulfilling its role." He added, "The National Police Agency should not merely talk about 'eradicating crime' but must devote all its efforts to strengthening investigative capacity and uprooting crimes that undermine the livelihood economy."
