2024.09.05. The Fair Economy — The Korea Communications Commission warned on the 5th that consumers should be especially vigilant, as fraudulent phone sales through false, exaggerated, and deceptive advertising related to Apple's iPhone 16, scheduled for release in September, could occur.

The so-called "fraudulent sales point" claims that consumers can purchase the latest smartphones at low prices, operating covertly through online cafes, blogs, and bands, but in reality it may mislead consumers by presenting the optional contract discounts and credit card partnership discounts offered by mobile carriers as if they were discounts at the distribution points.

To prevent damage from such deceptive sales, if a purchase price that is unreasonably cheap is offered, consumers should carefully verify the discount conditions and remaining installment amounts, and request further explanation for any unclear points.

Kim Tae-gyu, acting chair of the Korea Communications Commission, said, "We urge mobile carriers to refrain from illegal subsidies and stabilize the market, and together with the Mobile Carrier and Broadcasting Consumer Protection Association, we will monitor, focusing on complaint-reporting distribution points and online sales stores, whether pre-approval notices are posted, and plan to strengthen on-site inspections to prevent user damage from deceptive sales such as false, exaggerated, and deceptive advertising."
