2024.06.04. The Fair Economy — The Ministry of the Interior and Safety recently announced that it has improved five public websites so that all citizens can conveniently use digital government services.

To help users who are unfamiliar with digital devices, or who are using such services for the first time, easily access digital government services, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety developed the "Digital Government Service UI/UX Guidelines" and distributed them to relevant agencies in February.

A user interface (UI) refers to the medium created to enable communication and interaction between a user and a digital service, while user experience (UX) refers to the overall experience aimed at enhancing a user's satisfaction, including their general reactions and feelings when using a service.

The public websites improved through the pilot application of the UI/UX guidelines include Government 24, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the National Library of Korea, the National Health Insurance Service and Bokjiro.

In response to feedback that login methods were difficult to identify, the National Health Insurance Service separated and simplified screens by type of login authentication, making it easier for users to log in.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor took on board feedback that, without a search filter, it was difficult to find needed information through integrated search. It improved the service by providing search filters based on target and period and adding a re-search function within results, so that users can accurately find the information they want.

The newly improved sites have been restructured with a consistent, intuitive interface that enhances the user experience, and these changes are expected to let users feel the convenience of digital government services in their daily lives.

In addition, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Information Society Agency (NIA) plan to build the "UI/UX Korea Design System (KRDS)" by year-end to lay the foundation for effective and consistent digital government services.

The system provides standardized accessibility and usability guides, along with reusable design and development resources, for the development and maintenance of all websites and applications.

Through it, all professionals involved in planning, building and operating digital government services — including operators, planners and designers — are expected to receive the guides, resources and other support they need.

Meanwhile, smishing texts impersonating Government 24 have recently been circulating, and caution is advised.

Lim Jeong-gyu, director general of the Public Service Bureau at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, "The UI/UX of public websites and apps is an important touchpoint through which citizens experience public websites and apps." He added, "We will continue to improve the quality of digital services so that citizens can feel the changes in the digital platform government in their daily lives, and we will strive to get closer to people's everyday lives."
